Last month, we shared a quick piece on how the weather can affect your espresso pour. Since then, a few of you have asked about these chilly winter mornings — and why your coffee seems to drip out instead of pour.
Cold, dry winter air can absolutely impact your coffee. You might notice your espresso taking much longer to extract, or barely trickling through the basket. The reason? Cooler temps affect the density of your coffee grounds and the behaviour of your machine.
The good news: there’s an easy fix.
If it’s cold and your coffee is pouring too slowly, try adjusting your grind coarser. A coarser grind helps loosen things up and gets your pour back on track.
Later in the day, as the weather warms up, you might find your coffee starts gushing out too fast — in that case, dial the grind back finer again.
In short:
☕ Cold = coarser grind
☀️ Warm = finer grind
A little tweak goes a long way. Stay warm and happy brewing!
